Default Computer prob - stumped

Hi all - this is a rather long post so apologies in advance!

I've been having some problems over the last couple of weeks. There are a number of symptoms - Windows runs very slowly with lots of mouse and keyboard lag, although opening programs doesn't seem to take much longer than usual. Programs will go Not Responding for a while, then perk up again.
Occasionally it'll lock up completely and require a restart. Also some times it'll take several minutes to boot into Windows (and sometimes not get there at all). The same is true of the Recovery Console. And even more occasionally I get blue screens, at least one of which mentioned crc_disk.sys. Also whenever I do get to the repair console and choose to repair startup errors, it likes to fix file system errors, which it then fixes again next time I need to run the repair console.

I thought it might be a HD problem. I was running 2 Sammys, but both seemed to have problems (as I still got problems after disconnecting the non-OS drive, and Windows wouldn't detect the non-OS drive on its own). I got a new 1tb Hitachi and reinstalled Windows which seemed to fix the problem for a week or so, but now I'm seeing the same problems again. I've just checked the disk usage in Resource Monitor and found that some of the Response Times were up the in 70,000ms range (although they've come back down again now). I've never been in there before so I don't know if that's normal, but my wife's laptop seems to top out at around 6,000.

I'm kind of stumped really. I'm wondering if it's possible there's some sort of motherboard problem, but I can't figure out how to check that. Any ideas welcome - if not, thanks for reading all this way anyway

(Note - I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 on an nForce 680i mobo).
