Easiest way to make a 3D logo?

Anybody know the easiest way of making a 3D logo?

I've been given the task of making one, got as far as a fairly accurate model in Max but had some issues texturing it (everything kinda went black, even with adding lighting!)

I know photoshop CS4 has some 3D skills to, so tried to add the model in PS and texture it but didn't really know how to apply textures in there either!

anybody got any tips? I might also have to re-design the actual logo itself as we don't appear to have a high-res version

also, does anybody recognise this font? I've no idea what it is so might have to come up with a new one;
