Wordpress - Styling Child Themes?

Don't suppose anybody has any experience of setting up and styling Wordpress child themes?

I'm trying to style a site based on the K2 framework but I'm having issues overwriting the core K2 styles. I had assumed that if I simply change a colour of a link, for example, in my child style then it'd work, but its still not changed the default K2 style.

anyone got any ideas?
