VHS to DVD

hey chaps!

For christmas, I want to help my dad get some VHS home movies and the like onto DVD format. I have been looking at USB video capture products but seem overwhelmed.

I dont want to fork out 100s for a VHS / dvd recorder unit, as I figured I could make use of his DVD recorder on the computer.

An idiots guide would be most appreciated, along with recommendations for software / hardware.
