Networked? If it's a network printer that can contribute as you get latency while it figures out if the printer is online.

It's a huge amount of latency then compared to when I was running XP on the exact same network!
I don't mind a small bit of lag, but I'm talking 5-10mins of lag/freezed up Word or Adobe Reader to print a 2 page document with no images.

It's not turned on.
Browsing other PCs on the network is reasonably speedy, it's just the printer that isn't.

Sounds like broken drivers then. Might be worth deleting and re-installing the printer.
