Had exactly the same, noticed the post had arrived only to find a card saying they'd tried to deliver something about earlier on and I definitely hadn't heard a knock.
Same thing happened to my sister to, she was actually about 3 meters from the door when they apparently "rang" the doorbell. By the number of people who turned up at the post office to collect their undelivered items, it's fairly common. |

When I had it happen to me I complained - got 24 first class stamps out of it. I got told that especially in bad weather, Mr Postie would rather sit in his warm, dry van or under a shelter and write out all the cards - that way he spends minimum time just shoving the card though the letterbox rather than ringing the door and waiting.

DHL didn't even bother to leave a card to say they'd tried to deliver to me before xmas. I found out when I rang the lady I'd ordered from to discover she'd sent the item 2 weeks before. Luckily I found out that day or it would have been sent back to her the next and as it was a section of heavy chrome coated steel pole it would have cost me loads to have it redelivered.
