Can't say this is surprise to be honest. I had the pleasure of meeting Gazza a few times when he lived near Hoddesdon and it was a pleasure because not only was he a great player but he is actually quite funny in his own way. The problem was that he had no boundaries. I remember the way he was always branded as the next "George Best". Not exactly a role model for him at 19 when he Newcastle for Spurs as the county's most expensive player. Branded a fool and clown. Can't see him living to 50 tbh. shame

I grew up near his parents house so feel really bad for him. Yes he brought a lot of it on himself by surrounding himself with sycophants, but the footballing world have done nothing for him. Sir Bob got it right when he said that he has no real home to go to, he's been living out of hotels for years now so has no stability. I really hope he gets all the help he needs.

The problem with footballers of his generation was that they get thrown into the game at the age of 9,10 or 11 and come out the other end at the age of 30 odd without the social skills to manage the hangers on and the mind of a teenager. I don't know a lot about Gazzas other achievements but he strikes me as though his only career choice would be football or skid row.
Maybe some of the ex-pro's were right when they said he made the wrong career move going to Spurs. Would he have had these problems now if he was under a more protective manager like SAF ? |
