Just to be clear that was a fictional story told in the first person. 'I' here is a character, the narrator, not myself. I'm not paranoid about being mugged by people for my sandwich.
I've read it again and surely it's the narrator who is the biggest victim of his own prejudice as he is made to look a fool at his moment of triumph.
I can see other hints that not only are his prejudices irrational but hypocritical as well.
