Boring new camera thread, and some advice

Well i'd love a DSLR, but i can't afford one nor will use it enough to warrant it. I definitely need an ultra compact point & shoot though for nights out and to take cycling with me

Narrowed it down to the IXUS 70 or 85 (or whatever else Cannon want to call them in different countries

).

Both small, and have viewfinder which i didn't think i'd miss with my last camera, but realise its probably more important than a slightly bigger (but same res? whats the point in that) LCD. Don't really care about the pixel count, they'll both be more than necessary, in fact i'll probably turn them down anyways, for quicker writes and more pictures...

Basically what other difference are there between these? Both DIGIC III, and seem to be of similar spec, i can also put CHDK on both of them. So why should i get the 85, when the 70 is slightly smaller and probably half the price, thats an example of deals on it atm, i don't really want a printer with it.

Or have i missed another camera out ther in the ultra compact form that could be better/cheaper (or a mix of both?).
Cheers guys, i'm hoping to buy soon, i've been missing my camera since December now and i've missed so much (including xmas, new year, my 21st! to name a few, meh!).

Off the top of my head the 80 is probably slightly better. Its smaller, 8 over 7mp and um.... TBH I doubt you'll have any issues with the 70. It'll do the job you want. Save your money and use it on memory cards.

Thats not a bad deal on the 70 though right? £90 for camera and printer (floggable on ebay hopefully or possibly for my mum cause she may use it), can't seem to find the 70 for much less than that on its own

Yeah seems very good. When you add in a 2gb card, bag and bits you're looking at £30/40 for that so its worth saving your money.

IXUS 80:
Lens shift image stabalistaion is good

Slightly better video (this is improtant we do silly things

)
Everything else is the same downto the battery weight sensor etc...
I will hold out and/or look for deals on the 80!

Tbh i've got a million and one SD cards lying around so i won't need those, and my camera bag carries forward too, same size cameras, so its just the camera i'm after really

It also seems if i buy it in a slighty odd colour i save £20 on average... Caramel, i'll have to come round to that i think...

Well in the end i couldn't wait nabbed one for ~£150 from amazon, thats about what i was looking to spend, its what i paid for my last camera, seems about average, and hopefully i'm happy!

I always say that as long as you buy a Nikon, Canon, Fuji or Panasonic you'll be fine. Everything they make is good. Enjoy

its a little bit bigger than i imagined for some reason, or feels/looks bigger than it is, but its not a major issue, my last camera was pretty small, but it broke twice so also pretty fragile apparently, hopefully this one is up to the rigors of life!

I've found the CHDK probably won't be as easy as i first thought on this model camera because canon changed things around, but thats not a major issue yet either, "caramel" isn't a very appealing colour but i don't care for that too much, i guess its different from silver!

Other than the above, its super, loads and shot-to-shot are both quick, photos are luuverly, the way the camera is set out its great for quick snaps. Ie not everything is menu based the buttons for swapping video/picture are much better than my last camera which just remembered what setting it was in, which was awful if you wanted a quick video/picture and its bound to be in the wrong mode, cue traversing menus! Some really nice features like the zebra flashing of over/under exposed, and picture details, for a consumer compact camera, it does a lot more than most people would want to go anywhere near, keeps me happy though

//Edit: Playing with manual shutter speeds its *awesome* i've never been in control of the shutter before, the camera never trusted me, its fun
