That's how I watched it, also with 5.1 surround.

I watched Cloverfield the other week and I'm pretty indifferent to it. It was shot pretty good. I really liked the idea of it being a video diary of the events. Good special effects as well.

That said I thought the storyline was lazy. Obvious parallels with Godzilla but at least with that movie it gave you a bit of background on how Godzilla came about and why it went to New York. Cloverfield offered no such background except it was a big beasty terrorising New York. I think a little too much was left to the viewers imagination.

5/10 for me

Maybe.

I think that really worked in the original Blair Witch. Not so sure it works on film of this scale with a monster tearing New York a new one

But why not? If you look at Gozilla what are the chances that everyone in New York saw all the media reports and knew what was going on? If theres a giant monster attacking at your front door you might not stop to watch BBC News 24. Gozilla works because you get lucky. You're there with the scientist researching it and the press pushing to get a story. If you think more real world to 9/11 how long did it take for information about what was going on to hit the press? People on the street would have seen a plane hit the tower. The media reporting this but with no real clue as to why. Eventually its obvious its terrorists but I don't recall how long it took for the actual plot to be revealed. If you were there I'm not sure watching the news would be on your to do list at that time.
