carpet cleaning/refreshing tips?
Right, my carpet is beginning to look a bit scabby and horrible and I need to clean it up a bit and put some life back into it.
it's mostly horrible around my sofa where my feet are as I haven't got a rug or anything there. Does anyone have any tips on how to clean a carpet without one of those vax machines, are there any detergents that you can just scrub in and brush the crap out? or would I be better off renting a carpet cleaner for a weekend and blitzing the entire living room?

Rug doctor!!!
I loooooooooove them! Not only do they make it all clean again, but it lifts it all and makes it lovely and fluffy. My bedroom carpet is white, so I get it every few months to clean it all, and it always looks better afterwards.  PS: dont scrub the carpet... you will ruin it! |

Pretty pricey, £20 for 24 hours, without detergents or anything.

I wouldn't ever buy a carpet cleaner now, because the home ones just arent as good as the rug doctor ones. (I borrowed one of those vax ones off a friend and thought it was rubbish.) Plus the vacuumy thingy isnt as good on the home ones, so it doesn't fluff up the carpet as much.

The last time my parents got the rug doctor out they ruined our 2 grand rug in the living room. My mum was scared of cleaning it so got the "professionals" out. They used equipment that was too powerful for the rug and pulled the "bottom" (i have no idea of the term) through the rug resulting in little spots all over the rug.
After a load of arguing they got the treatment for free and offered another cleaning free, which they funnily enough refused. Cheers rug doctor. It probably depends on the cowboy whos running the machine, but they are by no means perfect

 He was **** anyway

Scrub it! Bucket of soapy water, plastic scrubbing brush and a couple of old, dry (and clean!) tea towels. Scrub with brush, rub with towel. We've done it several times in our rented flat and its a helluva lot cheaper than renting a machine.
