Unhappy Firefox3 + Winamp + Winamp toolbar = FAIL

I only recently installed Firefox 3 and decided that, since I'd had the Winamp toolbar installed on Firefox 2, I'd do the same for 3.

Everything working fine until last night. I was browsing away and decided I wanted to listen to some music. Fired up Winamp (my preferred music player) and stuck on some Jethro Tull, minimised and prepared to recommence browsing - Firefox crashes . Send report via the pop up window and start it up again - 5 seconds later and it crashes again. This happened several times so I just gave up as it was bed time anyway.

Decided to do the same tonight but the same thing happened (this time it was B.B King and Eric Clapton so it wasn't complaining about Jethro Tull ). Eventually my slow mind started to make the connection. As long as I was using Winamp, Firefox would crash. As soon as I stopped using Winamp - browser was fine.

I was on a roll now so I wondered if perhaps the Winamp toolbar extension was causing the problem so I uninstalled it - et voilá, here I am posting here and listening to Altered Images at the same time.

Had a bit of a look around and it appears to be a known problem and people are recommending using Foxytunes to control Winamp until they get it sorted.

Not much point to this except to say. If you're running Firefox 3, don't bother with the Winamp toolbar extension for the moment. Haven't tried Foxytunes yet, will give it a go tomorrow.

Winamp = FAIL full stop. Used to be good (version 2) but then everything kinda went downhill from there

I prefer winamp to windows media player and itunes. It seems to work fine for me? Ah I misread, I don't have the winamp toolbar!

Winamp version 5 is pretty good. Winamp 3 was a complete disaster.

The jury is still out for me on Firefox 3. I've got it on the Macbook but am not rushing to install it on the other machines and may end up going back to FF2.

Agreed. Winamp 3 was a complete and utter failure. The media engine wasn't broke, so they 'fixed' it, badly. The skinning engine did need work and that's the bit that survived.

Anyway, this doesn't surprise me. Firefox 3 is relatively new so it'll inevitably take some plugins a while to catch up. I've been using FF3 on the laptop since the early betas, and save for the fact they 'fixed' Alt+S (again :/) it's been fine. They also fixed the page scaling, which is better in some ways and worse in others. FF2 wasn't broken though so I never bothered updating this PC.

It's because it's not MediaMonkey. There, I said it now. I know how much you were struggling not to mention it, so I just came out and saved you the trouble.
