How to lose friends and alienate people

The first half is what would happen if Mr Bean said 'f***' a lot. The last third is like something Richard Curtis rejected as being too trite and feel good. In between there are some laugh out loud moments and some real clunkers.
Disappointing. 5/10

Scum

Starring
  • Ray Winstone
  • David Threlfall
  • Martin Philips
Drama set in a boys borstal.

7/10 Pretty good, the version I watched was the original made for TV 1977 edition if that makes any difference. It's harsh but well played throughout, I've got no idea what borstal would be like but I can imagine some of it probably fitted quite well with the time.

Lord Of War

Starring
  • Nicholas Cage
  • Jared Leto
  • Bridget Moynahan
  • Ethan Hawke
Nicholas Cage as an arms dealer.

8/10 Good film but it seemed to lose its way for a period and felt as if it were padded out rather than a taut storyline. Not too overbearing on the moralistic issues although still perhaps a little heavy handed. It's basically a 7/10 film but I'm giving it an extra mark just for Nicholas Cage being in it and the fact that I can never see him without thinking of the magnificence that is "why couldn't you put the bunny back in the box".

Dead Man Walking

Starring
  • Susan Sarandon
  • Sean Penn
  • Robert Prosky
  • R. Lee Ermey
A man on death row for a murder and the nun who develops a relationship with him.

8/10 It's another good film, taut and great performances from all the actors. Susan Sarandon winning a deserved Oscar for her part, it isn't a cheery film and not one I'd be in a hurry to rewatch but definitely worth the two hours.

The Thin Red Line

Starring
  • Jim Caveziel
  • Nick Nolte
  • John Cusack
  • Adrien Brody
WWII film about the conflict at Guadalcanal

6/10 It is a good film and I'm possibly being a bit harsh with the score but it just takes too sodding long and it appears at times like the director is a frustrated nature documentary maker rather than an entertainment filmmaker as such.

Gangster No. 1

Starring
  • Malcolm McDowell
  • David Thewlis
  • Paul Bettany
  • Saffron Burrows
Gangland film about a psychopath who emulates a gang leader

6/10 Not bad although not a classic of the genre, wasn't particularly keen on Malcolm McDowell's character although in fairness that might have a lot to do with not really thinking much of him as an actor in general. A decent enough way to waste an hour and a half.

I love that film but can't watch it because when the boy slashes his wrists and the blood is seeping through the sheets and he's pushing the buzzer actually made me feel physically sick. It's one of a handful of films that has had that effect on me, which I suppose is credit to the quality of the film.

Not bad, reminds me of WoW now but to many twists for my liking.
