Default Engagement Party, Do I need to buy a present

What is the general census on buying a present for an Engagement Party its a close mate, get on well with him but not got a clue if or what I would have to buy.

Pretty skint so would a tenner in a card be ok?

Never bought him anything before just a card for when they moved into there new house few years ago.

I've never bought a present for any of my mates.

Buy them a bottle of nice fizzy plonk to celebrate with and give them a card ( I think a tenner in a card would be a bit weird! It's like something your Grandma gives you on your birthday )

Aye, drink is the way to go with something like this. If in doubt, buy a bottle

Card should suffice, and if you see some silly little thing in the card shop, they're good too Most card shops tend to have silly gimmicky love or mickey take love stuff.

I didn't really expect much at my engagement party (tbh I wouldn't have had one if my now wife hasn't insisted), but actually got some really really cool gifts, not necessarily expensive but if you can find something interesting/quirky/memorable for a similar amount it might be nice to get that in place of champagne.

How about some sort of good luck charm - like white heather or a shamrock or suchlike. Should be relatively inexpensive and would be an agreeable sort of thing for the occasion, I would have thought.
