Asus Eee PC 900

My father came back today from Staples with a photo copy of an advert for an Asus Eee PC 900 for £150 (reduced from £198.67) with both Customer Return and Ex Demo boxes ticked and 10 month warranty written by hand at the bottom.

Spec listed as:
16GB SSD with Linux
Celeron M 353
1GB RAM
1.3MP Cam
etc.

I've not kept up with Netbooks but I know that the 900 model has been superseded by the new Atom based Eee PCs and also that the 900 model was the second of its kind to be released.

Does anybody think that the above is worth £150?

I've been looking out to get my father a new laptop for quite some time now (current laptop is a Centrino 1.7Ghz 512MB RAM Evesham setup which has a knackered PSU plug and the third battery on the way out). The Evesham was purchased 4 years ago (I think) but it won't last long.

Considering you can (or at least could last week, if the offer is expired I imagine a new one will appear somewhere else) get a brand new Acer Aspire One for £200 with an Atom, 1GB RAM and 120GB hard drive, a returned ex-demo Eee900 for £150 doesnt seem so brilliant.

Hell, Asda were selling brand new Aspire Ones for £150 last month, though with 512MB RAM and possibly an 8GB SSD.

I'd personally just keep an eye on hotukdeals and grab the next one that inevitably appears. New stuff is coming out all the time so old models are getting punted out cheap despite being almost identical specs.

As above really, keep an eye on HUKD and snap up a bargain for the newer models.

Until just before Christmas I was looking at getting him a Lenovo Thinkpad around £650.

My reasons for this was that hopefully a more robust business laptop would live through his treatment of electronic devices better than a £300 laptop or similar priced netbook.

What do you want it for? The Samsung NC10 is extremely well build, much more solid feeling than any laptop I've used before including any Dell (inc. the XPS range), Sony Vaio's, Toshiba's, Asus', Acer's and more.

My lenovo feels like a very solid bit of kit but I still managed to kill the HDD within 3 months of getting it.

I'm having one of these Eeeepc's for myself when the time is right. Those that want to carry on using the web as it was meant to be used should do the same.
I won't write my intentions in public but Linux/wifi/ultra portability suits my needs perfectly.

I'm told the Aspire Ones in Asda are actually still about here and there but you have to ask for them as they aren't on display.

1.6GHz Atom, 512MB RAM with a 120GB or 160GB hard drive (depending on stock) running the Linpus Linux most of them seem to.

Might be worth a phone call to a couple of your nearer branches.
