Maybe. Vista is well-known for it's rather braindamaged approach to audio settings. Plenty of threads 'out there' on this very problem.

I'm going to put a different set of drivers on now to see if it makes a difference. If not I guess I'll just buy some spdif Xbox 360 speakers, no doubt they're over priced though.

On the back of the VGA cable there is an SPDIF input, if I just got a set of SPDIF speakers and plugged them into the port on the back of the VGA cable, would the speakers work without any configuration?

The problem is finding some speakers that are actually SPDIF. :/

I think I've figured out the problem, in the realtek options there isn't an option for Mic playback, so I can't unmute it or enable it.

Maybe I could buy an external sound card?

Yup, you could assuming that also doesn't have the same problem. Separate speakers seems like your best bet (you won't have to have the laptop switched on to get sound, and laptop speakers generally aren't all that anyway so even the laptop might benefit from better speakers).

If I got some USB speakers and plugged them directly into the 360, would they work?

Cheers

No.

You might be able to get USB-powered speakers that would take audio input from the Xbox though. They might work, even if you had to power them from the laptop.
