Not having much luck with hdds

Well both my Samsung 1Tb drives are now dead/dying. They are:-
1TB Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1

Both brought in November. One has totally died and the other has just started throwing SMART errors and dropped from the PC last night. Both have been kept in what I consider good conditions, filtered AC power from UPS with good ventilation all round and an 80mm fan turning over both of them. They were used in the server and only as a media drive, so very very light use.

Ho hum, off to raise a ticket with samsung support.

Before this year I never had issues with hdds failing...

This doesn't surprise me. I've personally had 2 fail in the last few years and I've had 2 back from customers over the last few months. One was part of a RAID set-up.

I doubt I'd buy samsung drives again, not that any others are any better. They are cheap for a very good reason.

Indeed, at the time of getting them it was either them or the Seagate 7200.11's. WD's were still far too expensive. Having just had the Seagate's fail and all the issues around the 7200.11's in general, I went Samsung.

Looks like I am back to Western Digital. I think I will go with their RE class drives, a bit more but saves the ballache of (hopefully) not having to send them back.

Not sure how this ended up in another thread. vB weirdness to the max. Let's try this again...

I've got three WD GP drives in a Drobo. Cooling is, shall we say, sufficient - I've seen better. Blatted the hell out of them in the early days due to pushing Drobo to its limits. I'm in month 9 now and none of them have given me any trouble at all. I can't remember if the RE drives use IntelliPower (WD-speak for 'usually 5400RPM'). No harm in that though for non-primary use (Media drive fits that bill).

Samsung SpinPoints used to be a good choice. Shame they've gone downhill.

I have always used WD HHD's and had no probloms at all with. Only my latest build have switched to Seagate, which have been working find, so far ! !

I left fighting with the Samsung tool till after I got back from hols. A word of warning to you all, the samsung tool is absolute garbage! On the website there is version v2.12a which is totally broken.

You need this tool to see what error code there is. I have tried the Ultimate boot cd v4.11 and v5beta, in the end to get v2.11z of the tool (which works) I found it on "Hiren boot cd".

Both mine have died with AJ26 error which once you know the error code there is a plethora of posts on the net about it. It appears that this is caused by the hdd running out of spare sectors to replace the broken ones. I've been told to low level format the drive which seems a bit of a bodge tbh.

I got speedfan on the case with them and one is running at 27 and the other 30.

I've had a fair few Samsung's fail at work recently, Hitachi (despite their big problems in the past) are now the most trustworthy in my eyes, we currently use them exclusively, don't think we've had one fail yet.
