That worries me, spending money via a non-official store.

To be more precise, in a store that's built for what are technically hacked devices. No thanks.

Of course, a lot of these apps that are chargeable via Cydia will appear elsewhere as dodgy downloads anyway but I'm just a little cautious about this sort of thing.

Cydia store has been around for ages. That's not to say I don't understand the reluctance, because I do, but micro-payment sites are becoming more and more common.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Most payments are handled through Paypal so I don't see the issue

I've probably spent more on Cydia than I have the App store.
