I think you can always tell if people have faked it....however these moisturisers with tan in them are more subtle! Plus theres always that tell tale digestive biscuit smell....

I don't see how you can always know if it's not something that you can measure with a control group. It's like me saying "I always recognise blue people" but only recognizing the ones I know and missing hundreds of others walking around because they don't look like I'd expect blue people to look. Doesn't make sense to me but there you go!
I'd bet if you looked at photos of people back from recent holidays they'd often look lke they've fake tanned, and people who haven't, will have a nice, natural even tan when they have faked it because they've done it properly. Bad fake tan is obvious. Good fake tan is what you will assume is a 'natural' tan. My boss currently looks like he's San Tropezed, because he's got 'goggle marks' when in fact, he's back from Egypt with suntanned brown skin and sunglass marks and looks totally out of place, wheras another girl in my section has a beautiful, natural looking tan that came straight out of a bottle!
