In a fantasy world of opposing kingdoms, a 15-year old girl named Helena who works at the family circus with her father and mother, who wishes--quite ironically--that she could run away from the circus and join 'real life'. But such is not to be the case, as she finds herself on a strange journey into the Dark Lands, a fantastic landscape filled with giants, Monkeybirds and dangerous sphinxes. It's been a few years since I've watched this, I have it on DVD back home already having liked it.
It was very much a random whim that introduced it to me in the first place and I found it immensely charming.

It's a Jim Henson production, and it smacks of it, and their particular surrealist approach to things. You could also draw some fair parallels with Alice in Wonderland. Nothing is quite as it seems, and whilst the world she enters is utterly bizarre there is a particular kind of logic to it.

It's reasonably well acted, with a whole heap of well known names providing voices and bodies, with a beautiful blend of CGI and reality.
