Default PHPBB2 Spammers

I have a site set up that uses PHPBB2 for it's forum.

The owner wanted a cheap open source discussion board, however the site is being plagued by spammers.

Anything I can do apart from set user verification, to me?

Not hugely familiar with the software, but I think I read you can find third party captcha mods to make it more aggressive than it is by default.

have you checked the support forums? they've got loads of security/anti-spam plugins on there.

Yup. Moderate accounts, find and use a captcha for account registration, and turn off guest posting. That should do it.
