They do actually have a point - it's actually impossible to get 8Mbps on a standard ADSL line, so for 'rare', substitute 'non-existant'. According to PlusNet, the best you can get is 7.15Mbps...

Okay, so we've got the backbone to allow a few customers to do that when necessary but.. At the time of the first spike he was only supposed to be on 100Mb b/w with 200Mb burst, but some numpty had removed the limit. Networks spotted and capped it again. He managed to persuade them to allow up to 500Mb just for the weekend until he could arrange something more permanent this week. The 100/200 connection was worth in the ball park of 4.5k - 5k pcm. Hate to think what his re-negotiated bill is worth.

I think that's about the speed Dym is getting on a Virgin 20 meg connection. Strikes me as crap.
