American Gangster - 7/10
Good film, great performances, but never really felt like it ever got properly going. As with a lot of films that are based on true stories, the climax was a bit of a let down. One of those where they suddenly end it and flash up a bunch of narratives saying 'Mr. X went to jail and got out in '83. He died in Phoenix in '92.' 'Jimmy got shingles and fell down the stairs.' That sort of thing. There were some great touches though, like where the police and the rival gangsters are doing separate searches in different locations and they show the duality of it. I also liked that the viewer doesn't know who to root for (or maybe that was just me?). They made Denzel Washington's character really moralistic (in his own way) and likeable, but similarly showed Russell Crowe as an honest cop at the expense of being a lousy husband and father. A lot of effort went into reproducing that 70s feel as well.

You're not one of those who despise Mel Gibson because Braveheart didn't quite happen the way the film went are you? It's just entertainment at the end of the day, so sit back and enjoy it!

No, Mel Gibson is a hero. I just don't like that they misrepresented the defeat of the Armada, when it was an interesting story the first time round.

Depends on the film and why it was altered and the significance of it. e.g Braveheart doesn't particularly annoy me, but U-571 does.

Skip to 3:50 for the Braveheart bit, or just watch it all because it's funny!

Hah, U-571 is always the one that erks me. Never have the American movie writers appeared more arrogant in their 'development' of a non-fictional event.

Gangster No. 1
Starring
6/10 Not bad although not a classic of the genre, wasn't particularly keen on Malcolm McDowell's character although in fairness that might have a lot to do with not really thinking much of him as an actor in general. A decent enough way to waste an hour and a half.

7/10 I reckon. It's basically Casino Royale but with a more obscure title and, well, not as good.
