The lack of thought put into "Security question" systems in general annoys the hell out of me. For most people the most likely person to be trying to compomise their account is someone they know, whether it's a curious partner, a vengeful ex or just their mates having a laugh. So how is it in anyway secure to allow access to the account to anyone who can answer a trivial question that anyone who knows you well can answer?

Where possible I'll avoid putting any answers into such systems. If they insist I'll put gibberish. The best systems are ones where you can wrote your own question too, then I usually make the question itself cryptic to the point that no-one else will even be able to work out what it's actually asking.

I agree, someone I know could very easily find out my mother's maiden name with very little effort on their part and this is one of the most common security questions out there. I wish there were better measures in place.

One clever student told me that what they did to get around the system and prevent forgetting the answers was to just put 'tomato' for every answer. I was quick to point out that they'd TOLD ME THIS.

One way around this it to always use the answers of someone else you know very well. But yes, the best system we have at work allows you to write your own questions and answers. We used to have a woman that worked at our place whose security question was 'What is your bra size?', her answer.............................'too small'

That is brilliant Muban

Questions like what is your mother's maiden name are rubbish for me. My mom never got married, so I have to pick a different question.

Why not use her current name? Less chance of getting that right than if she actually had a maiden name, I'd have thought!

I would but if anyone knows me and wants to change my stuff, then it is pretty easy to know what my surname is!

Yeah I'm just thinking that the very last name i'd go for as someone's Mother's maiden name...is that person's current surname. Chances are probably not that high!

Ahaha Mubs! And Beemit! That's like my kinda answers to security questions! I always tend to go with what I can see in front of me or a name/word I've heard people call out! Eg: (note these are examples not ones in use )

Mothers Maiden Name: Tom Jones
First Pets Name: Sledgehammer
Favourite Colour: Cheese
Memorable Place: Not Nemo (this once was an answer to be fair but it's since changed...)

It's brilliant for me though as I have a very cue dependent memory so when I think back to putting in the answers I can visual/imagine what was around me really vividly and never forget. Sometimes I might write out the question if it's for something important and put a cryptic clue like with Mothers Maiden Name: "Throw Knickers" (would remind me of I''''veeeeee neeeever throooown myyyy knicckkkkkkers at yooou, and I don't come from waaaaales - tom jones tom jooooones!")

Since doing the above, if someone managed to break my passwords I would be amazed!

Mei mei - I hate that too. I was in the bank the other day waiting for a meeting and I just looked at the HSBC staff and cringed at their attire. Obviously all a uniform but they looked so so bad - bad enough I thought they'd be better in their own clothing with a name ID and be a mish mash as opposed to a set uniform as it looked like a poor air hostess unit.
