Oh and me and Lom watched Layer Cake last week too. (I've seen it several times, it's one of my favourites)

Let Me In - 9/10

I didn't know if I was going to enjoy this, but we went to a preview last night and I really did. Thought it was great.

It's a remake of a Swedish film called Let the Right One Inand although I haven't seen the original yet, we have it to watch so I may be able to compare soon.

It centres around Owen, bullied 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with an odd little girl who moves into the next door apartment in Los Alamos in New Mexico in the early 1980s. Owen's Mom and Dad are split and his mom is always seen with a wine glass nearby or arguing with his Dad on the phone. He doesn't have much, and when the little girl moves in next door, they bump into each other in the small communal play area in the courtyard outside their building. She always has bare feet.

The pair strike up a friendship and the story moves on from there.

It's a very odd movie because to be honest, the thought of a human/vampire pre-teen love story wouldn't make me go and see it, but it's important to make the distinction that while this movie is about kids, it's very definitely not for kids.

The direction is classic Hammer. It manages to get that eerie, evocative 70's/early 80's style absolutely bang on, without the laughable (sorry, I love hammer, but a lot of it is so bad it's good!) elements. It reminded me of Carrie in a lot of ways, especially the bits where I wanted to rip my own hair out because I couldn't help him from the bullies. Owen reminds me a lot of the little chap in about a boy -has huge lips and eyes and looks terrified most of the time. The acting from the two young leads is superb, just brilliant. I love them both! Even the bullies are great little actors (the lead bully is David Shepherd from Lost!)

The gory bits are gory, but they're relevant and the film isn't defined by them. To say that, I mean it's not a SAW or a gore-fest. There are bits when the audience squealed and looked away, but laughed with nerves after because it was that classic kind of Hammer gore - lots of blood and people thrashing about and people watching through their hands but never over the top enough to feel uncomfortable. There's also bits where you're not quite sure what's going to happen, some bits that feel quite 'wrong' but that are explained when events unfold further through the movie.

I don't know if it's because I remember being scared by the Hammer movies when I was too young to be cynical, but it really made me squirm at times, It's something in the way it's made, in the direction I think. Put it this way, it's certainly not a Twilight & I think a lot of people (teens) going to see it because they think it is will be disappointed. This isn't a tale of teenage angst & sparkly, clean-faced vampires. So, take bad reviews at face value - watch the trailers and make your own mind up. I'd say go and see it on Oct 31st

Also, there's a great BD spotting moment where they go into a room and 'TAK' is scrawled across the walls

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Not my film choice, but friends invited me along. Am a bit more familiar with the Finance industry now so 'got it' more than I would have done. Haven't seen the 80s film either, but I think the storyline was similar.

Ending was a bit :/ 'is that all?' Could have been better. Good performances from Carey Mulligan, Michael Douglas and Shia La Beouf.

It was ok, but not worth the £9 I spent. Wanted to watch the Facebook film boo

6/10

Kitten: Let Me In sounds rather interesting, I've seen the original and normally shy away from remakes like they're infected but based on what you've said it might be worth a watch anyway.

Yesterday I did a little film marathon.
Heres a few very short reviews:

Despicable Me: Stupidly Funny, the minions are excellent

Legend of the Guardians: Great storyline, absolutely rubbish 3d.

Paranormal Activity 2: Bland activity......2 (also, scenes from the trailer, not in the film)

Had this for a while and finally got around to watching it. Really like the style it was filmed in with a kind of gritty look to some of the scenes. Some good character development through the film as you start to see a different side to people and why they act the way they do. A good level of realism without needing to see too much graphic detail just for the sake of it.

Really good watch without being too over the top.

7/10

RED: 8/10

Enjoyed it, but then Bruce Willis is in it (looking more like Homer Simpson every time I see him). Bones from Star Trek is in it too, and it's good to see him in a different role.

More than passable way to spend a few hours Much better than the other 'get all the oldie dudes together' Expendables.

The Great Escape

Yes it's old, yes it's long, yes everyone knows what's going to happen but my word it's good.

Sat in front of the telly yesterday evening I suddenly remembered that I had this on DVD so I dragged it out and put it on. Three hours later it finished and I'd not noticed the time passing at all, that's the mark of a great film. Even YMF watched it all and as we all know, teenagers have roughly half the attention span of a goldfish.

There's nothing I can say about this film that's not been said before so I'll just say...

10/10
