Will, my understanding of the donor waiting list is that kids and people who live heathily go high up the list and people who abuse their body like smokers or alcoholics will go lower down. I think how close to death the patient is is also taken into account but I'm not sure how much weight that has.

I don't understand why people are so against changing the bill... If you REALLY don't want to donate organs, then after the law is changed and you feel so strong opt out? Easy? If you're impartial but too lazy to say yes (me really), then you're good to be chopped up. Although i don't understand why people wouldn't want to donate, i don't really care enough as long as all the impartial people contribute...

Quite right Will, I would be very annoyed (even though Id be dead ) if my organs went to an alchoholic or a heroin addict or something, they've done nothing to deserve my organs. I am sure the family I leave behind would have something to say about that as well

I wouldn't mind either, if I was dead, I just hope there's enough left of my body or that I don't die of some ****ty disease which makes them unuseable.

I'm pretty sure that you can't stipulate who your organs go to.

as far as i can see it there is no real excuse for opting out of donation - every reason i can think of is selfish (this, however, doesn't mean that i don't want people to be able to opt out - it's all personal choice)
and as has been suggested earlier - if you opt out of donating - you should also be opted out of receiving but could this really ever be the case? even if you whole heartedly believe that you don't want to be 'used for spares' - could you say no if your other half could be saved by an organ donation? could you be so selfless as to turn that down if it was offered? and as for the suggestion that people on the waiting list should have done something to deserve your organs - why? can you really say that you would rather your organs went to waste than to a drug addict / alcoholic? where then would we draw the line - i only want my organs to be used by loving parents / virgins / members of the clergy? i carry a donor card, i give blood and i am on the bone marrow donor register. if i could give a kidney / part of my liver - i would. what greater act can there be than to give someone 'more time'? 2. Yes I can really say that. I'd rather my organs be used for research or development than for them to go to waste on someone who has no respect for life or the second chance they are about to get. 3. That's really a little over dramatic but I'm sure you were just trying to make a point, it doesn't have to be that complicated.
