Very sorry to hear that.
My girlfriend's debit card was nicked out of her purse by a clever little **** in a pub a few years ago. Her handbag was down by her feet; he kicked it over and her mobile and purse fell out of the top. He picked up her mobile (and swiped her debit card out of her purse at the same time), tapped her on the shoulder and said "Sorry, I kicked your bag over and your phone fell out - here you go" which immediately made her think "Cheers" rather than "Thieving card-lifting bastard" so she didn't check to see if her card was there until the following day by which time he/they'd used it to make about £500 worth of online purchases. Thankfully when we reported it to our bank (A&L) they sent us a form to sign to say that none of the transactions were ours and then refunded the whole amount. Hope you get it sorted. |

I'd setup a second account, or open a different bank account for your holiday fund, and leave the card at home (hidden). That way at least your holiday fund won't be compromised. I've had nearly £3k taken over the past few years - always got it back though, they're pretty good at giving money back especially if you're a good person who doesn't have weird spending habits. I've now spread my money over several accounts.
All this chip and pin stuff is rubbish - it does nothing to save your card. It just shifts the onus onto you rather than the retailer. Hope it gets sorted soon!

Or get an account that has no card at all (e.g. some sort of online saver).

That sucks Holly. I'd be really pee'd off :/
You will get your money back though....it's just a matter of how long it will take.

It is handy to have a card for an account, especially since I am quite low on funds anyway even though I dont use my savings money alot it puts me at ease knowing I can have access to it without going to a bank.
I went to the bank at lunch and they were very helpful. It took about 40 minutes for them to get all the forms sorted, phone up HQ etc I found out that 9 transactions were made on the 1st & 2nd Feb. There were two seperate cashpoints and a shop. One was def in London. Now I do just have to sit and wait for them to contact me gah but hopefully it will be all sorted soon!

Damn :/
I'm in Colombia at the moment and lost my wallet somewhere between travelling from Mexico, via Panama, to here. I didn't notice for a week and it was Friday evening when I did notice so although I cancelled my card, I had a very nervous 48hrs waiting to call the branch and ask if anyone had used it. Fortunately nobody had otherwise I'd have been screwed methinks! |

Bloody hell! At least you found out and are getting this sorted out.
NatWest sometimes ring my Mum up when I've used her card to buy something expensive that I want to buy with a credit card to get the extra protection. She actually hates it! They ring up and ask HER to prove her identity. She thinks that if NatWest want to ring her then they need to prove THEIR identity. |
