Yup. Why not just get a SMart car? Cheap, reliable, economical. It ticks ALL the boxes.

Same with old Alfa Romeo owners, why do they insist on buying them when they consistently break down, have bits drop off, catch fire? Because to some car owners it's more than just a car, it's their soul. You don't give up on your soul.

If my soul consistently broke down had bits drop off and caught fire i'd be suicidal. Or CBS.

I see you trying to be funny, but you misunderstood my post. Where I said "go for something more modern", I thought it was clear I was referencing the engine, not the whole car. Given how old the car is "something more modern" still gives plenty of scope to use pretty old stuff.

On a later car like a 100E, Anglia or Cortina it's got a conventional axle and prop so you can swap in pretty much any motor with relative ease. The closest engine to fit is the later 100E sidevalve which is much stronger and more powerful and I can retain all the original running gear, but it's a bit of hacking about and extra expense that I don't want to do at the moment. Stay tuned because there may be one in the future and it will be totally full bore
