Yes, BlackBerry is overkill if you aren't a heavy e-mail user.

I do and still have the Asus 1000h, however changes in work environment, requires me to have a phone that can allow me access to internet and mail while working. [Lab environment]

If you need email access while working then surely your employer should provide it to you?

I have learnt to keep work email and my email apart you see. Yes there are computer rooms I can use, but it will be better for several reasons imo to have something on my phone I can use solely for mine

Im sure that if your work is getting in the way of your social life then your employer would be happy to arrange for you to have more free time....

you shouldn't really have personal things in a lab environment that you'll just use in an out of the labs anyways. And I agree with ChumpyChops that unless you're given the freedom (which obviously by wanting a separate device you aren't) to check your personal emails at work then you shouldn't be doing it. I know for sure that in my labs we're not allowed to take/use any personal things within the labs unless we're going to alcohol clean them when taking them out or leave them in the labs, but I guess we're more concerned about contamination than the NHS
