Avengers

Brilliant action but I really struggled with the plot which seemed to have been pulled from a book of clichés, still some genuine LOL moments made up for it.

Film 8/10

Actual enjoyment 6/10, I really hate going to the cinema

Puny God was my favourite part of the film

Shaolin Soccer:

WHAT THE ACTUAL F***!?!? So much genius I think I pulled a muscle laughing

Makes little to no sense pretty much all the way through and the special effects are terrible but what a superb film

7/10

Shaolin Soccer is brilliant although I think Kung Fu Hustle is even better. Both are films that are great simply for the pure enjoyment and silliness they involve.

John Carter

You know the infinite monkey theorem that states a monkey hitting keys at random on a keyboard for an infinite amount of time will write Shakespeare. Well I think they hired that monkey to write John Carter but kept him supplied with booze, weed and shrooms whilst he was writing as only that could explain the sheer disjointed randomness of this film and that's before I start on the gaping plot holes that can't be described as Swiss cheese as never before has a Swiss cheese been made big enough to encompass the holes required to make this a valid metaphor.

This is a real shame as they must have spent an absolute fortune on the special effects, I know that we've now entered an age where we expect computer generated characters to seamlessly integrate into films but it is really impressive in this film just how seamless the integration is and just how much they are used. It's almost worth watching the film for this alone but not quite which is a real shame.

I know little about the original books as I've never read them. I only know about them vicariously because Michael Moorcock is a fan of them and he wrote some similar stories.

However, I read a review by MM of this film and he seemed to really enjoy it. A lot of fans of the original books seemed to enjoy it too, although they all did all say that the film was too close to the "concept" of the books to be commercial... Maybe it's one of those "by fans for true fans only" things...
