Possibly the difference in temperatures between the land mass and the sea. Or, it's just as cold, but lacking the right moisture. Certain air masses get far inland before dumping, others drizzle before clearing inland.

*hugs his meteorological certificates*

Now, who wants a lecture on quasi-stationary occluded fronts? Stop yawning at the back!
