He was the first person that came to my mind, but wasn't sure he'd be counted for our generation.

Some (maybe most) will laugh, but how about Jon Bon Jovi? I've seen them live twice and he has the crowd eating out the palm of his hand. Great energy, great live performer (he should be with over 20 years experience) and a great singer as well.

why would they have to be mainstream to qualify? if you were trying to find the most successful, then they'd have to be mainstream... seeing as you're looking for best, my initial post, and subsequent suggestions all whoop Liam Gallagher with ease.

I will always claim Robbie Williams is one of the best front men around.
As much as he can be an irritating ****, he is a superb showman and knows how to work a crowd when he's on stage performing. Some good examples are his live at Knebworth performance and him on stage for "Swing when you're winning"; both totally different performances and suited the music. Edit: You know what.. I'm not even sure why I bothered posting in this thread. No matter what anyone says Gilly will disagree with them; mainly due to how big an Oasis fan he is. That a large number of people consider the Gallagher brothers to be drunken loutish twats re-hashing Beatles songs in various guises will never even enter into the equation.
