I've found a lot of people automatically say "how are you" when I open the door but they just carry on walking past not expecting an answer because they've turned it into meaningless words rather than a question

We have someone here in the office who always greets with "you alright?" with a slight lift at the end to make it a question. It's not the normal "alright", "alright" greeting and it grates when she does it.

Strictly speaking it's 'Roiterz!' in Bristolese.

But I'm on your wavelength Feek, if I should ever manage to get to a meet I'll know exactly how to greet you.
