Feeling like I have to justify things to people re finances:

i.e. I am exceedingly poor this month and mentioned that I wouldn't be going out to a do because I can't really spare the cash, but then had a colleague say "well you're off to a Brazillian restaurant tonight and you've just got a new bike & replaced your phone, so funny you can't afford a night out".

Yes.

#1 The restaurant is paid for with vouchers that I got for doing some photos for someone. No cost to me at all.

#2 The bike is paid for through the cycle to work scheme, so costs me nothing for a few weeks and little after that, and will save me money in fuel etc over the course of time.

#3 The phone, I replaced for buttons, is a MUCH lower spec than the one I had stolen and is the phone I use for photographic jobs - if I don't have one, I lose money. Simple. Plus I paid it on a storecard which I'll have to pay back over the course of the next few months.

The point is, things aren't always as they seem. I can't afford a night out and I've already said that I don't really want to go. Why question me like I'm in Crown Court when surely it's relative what I do with my own money anyway!?!

Totally irrational but why 'A capella'? I know it's a legit term but most people will assume that's a typo and it should be Acapella, which makes it look like she's made a mistake and people are saying 'She can't remember how to say Acapella' etc. Just wish they'd said 'a Jazz singer' or similar.
But I find it annoying when people write or spell things incorrectly just to please the ignorant masses. It is "A capella" so write it correctly.

How about - BECAUSE of those things is why I can't afford a night out.

People are like that with us, 'well you can afford to go racing', yes, and we can afford nothing else BECAUSE we go racing....

People who think it's ok to phone someone before 7am to ask a favour.

When the phone started ringing at 20 to 7 this morning, realising that my alarm hadn't gone off so it was before 7am I naturally presumed there was some kind of emergency.

But no, it was someone asking if I would take her daughter to school today. I didn't mind at all taking the child to school, but knowing the parent doesn't leave for work until 9am, and the parent knowing I wouldn't be leaving for the school run until half 8, 20 to 7 was a bit extreme to say the least!

I get that too, but which is more important? Making a grammatical point or putting the message of the charity across? The focus of the poster has completely shifted in our offices (which are an official sponsor this year) to whether it's "A capella" or "acapella" rather than the devastating reality of the disease.

Oh and another thing that niggled me, btw, it's "A cappella" not "A capella". Tsk at the ignorant masses

"the lighted torches flickered in the dark"

For some reason "lighted" always grates with me, whereas "lit" seems right.

The reality is both are correct, but the former has been dropping out of common usage over the last 70 years.

Well, I thought it was, but I checked against the spelling in your post that I quoted, and went with that instead.... just goes to show, you shouldn't assume....

Nope, you shouldn't. Point I was making was to do with whether it was A capella or Acapella, not around the spelling of the word they have chosen as I doubt that many people would realise that that was also incorrect. To point that out also would have detracted from the real point I was trying to make and confused the issue, which is ironically, what they have done on the poster.

I'd just think if you're making a point about something being spelled correctly (rather than questioning the correct usage of the word) and tsking at pleasing 'the ignorant masses' then you'd make sure you got it right yourself rather than copy something you thought was wrong. But then, that's just me

Employers who lie to your face & pretend they treat their staff with respect. In particular those who try to be your best mate then stab you in the back the second they get a tiny bit of assumed power. No wonder people hate their jobs!
