Well not really, because initially, it just meant 'and other things'. Literally speaking it meant 'other things such as these' , i.e. a logical continuation, but it's not the only usage, just the most common one.

I was always taught it just meant 'and the rest', or 'and so on', meaning you could never just have a list of random things followed by 'etc.' as it would be illogical like you say. I guess to use it to mean 'and other things' just looks wrong to me now.

Whether it's logical, right or wrong, isn't an issue. It's an irrational thread - ergo, completely valid and needs not be analysed any further! etc....

Didn't think it was an soley irrational thread anymore, and pretty much anything said in here previously has been up for discussion, so is this!

I have a rational rant
Rude and ignorant people. I'm sick of chasing certain people, checking up on them, being interested in their lives and asking questions about things only to be basically ignored unless they want something. ENOUGH! You can **** right off. It's common courtesy, FFS. Actually, don't bother telling me about the things I've asked you, I actually don't care anymore *washing hands motion*

Another that riles me: popular songs redone with a guitar instead of lyrics. It takes a lot of skill to do but sounds terrible to my ears. Mainly, I guess, because the way lyrics are sung is very different to the way a guitar is played, and I'm overly familiar with what the lyrics should be. It also doesn't help that with lyrics you often get the same note repeated many times in a row with different words so it sounds good. On an instrument it sounds... like the same note repeated over and over again. Hard to explain but if you happen to catch the current Sainsbury's insurance advert that has The Monkees' 'The Monkees' theme on it you may be able to hear what I'm talking about.
Another famous example: Jeff Beck playing 'A Day In The Life' by The Beatles. Amazing song, highly skilled guitar player. Skip to 2:20 though and tell me you love it. If it wasn't a famous song we'd all be looking at each other nervously wondering if it was meant to be serious. And with that I'm going to try not to post in this thread so often!
