As far as Wimbeldon goes (and I'm not saying it applies to anyone here), I've heard that whine from a lot of people. Many of them the same ones who got really excited about the Olympics. Yet the sports they got really excited about during the Olympics they too couldn't give a stuff about the rest of the time

Spending an hour from the point of turning into Alton Towers from the main road waiting in a long queue of traffic to get parked. Then finding out when you finally get through the gates that all of the rides have a 2 hour wait on them. Oh and having to book your ride time when purchasing a fast track ticket (and only being able to buy a fast track ticket for one ride on Nemesis due to the extortionate prices!).
And then the one ride that your 9 and a half year old is desperate to go on breaks down at 3pm while you're halfway through a 2 hour wait for another ride, and despite there being 3 hours before the rides close, that one ride stays closed. Darn you Rita! You've never let me down before! I'm sunburnt (despite applying plenty of factor 50 kids sun protection) and grumpy!

I agree it happens with other sports, Olympics, etc. and if it were one of those occasions I'd be moaning about that too

I do watch athletics when it's on anyway and quite a lot of other sports but I'd freely admit to getting more excited about random sports during the Olympics than I would normally. Part of that is purely that there is coverage to watch though and easily available at that - if I've got to find some obscure internet stream to watch the handball world championships then I'm less likely to do so. I don't think that it means I couldn't/shouldn't appreciate it when I do see it - I was fortunate enough to see a handball match live at the Olympics, damned if I know what was going on but it was very entertaining anyway.

Hey, I'm not dissing those who like to watch these sports, or get excited about them, per se, I'm moaning about the ones who, despite living in total disregard for the sport for 51 weeks of the year or so, suddenly feel the need to prove to me that they are somehow die hard fans who can't sleep at night unless they have waxed lyrical about the nuances of Slobodan Kyrcovic's backhand rebound serve or whatever, even if it's made up nonsense and the listener doesn't wish to hear it.
"Hi, are you watching Wimbledon today?" "No, I'm working" "Oh, I've booked the whole week off, I'm such a big fan of tennis" "Oh, you've never mentioned it before" "Oh God yes, I'm an enormous fan. I know all about it!! It's Krakatoa versus Semilonovitch today on court 6, I watched them take the slug off the court live on Sky Sports this morning... the slug is the thing they use to take the cover off the grass, you know..." "The what?" "Yes, it'll be an exciting match as Krakatoa can serve at nearly a thousand miles an hour... He's the fastest server in the tournament, although he is nine foot six and uses a special racket made of titanium and steel wire... "Yeah, look, I've got to go" "but, of course, Semilonovitch has a reaction time of two milliseconds and is the undisputed world best serve breaker, and we really don't know if Krakatoa can handle a 47 shot rally" "Look, I have to go" "and Semilonovitch holds the record for the most bananas eaten between sets" "I'm going now" "and Krakatoa once cut an umpires head off for calling out when it was clearly in" "I'm going to kill you if you continue to bore me with this rubbish" "and the winner will go on to play against the Armenian Kgyrgrtsyrts who is ranked one thousand and thirty seventh in the world but beat Smolongingos over clay in straight sets at last years Azerbaijan open" "Someone pass me that carving knife..." |

Why do so many otherwise sensible and intelligent people share loads of 'Share this post to win a 60" TV' from a page called something like 'John Lewis__' that was created an hour beforehand.
Surely it's pretty obvious it's not real and large companies like John Lewis have no need to give away 15 TVs in order to gain the 'exposure' of 347 idiots sharing a post on facebook?
