If you do the intensive courses (which is what I want to do), you have to have taken and passed your theory and hazard perception before they will even book you in.

Ahh fair enough, I went the traditional route.
I'm not sure if I agree with intensive courses, I like Will's idea of having to be on the road for a certain period. I'm just not sure that you'd be able to learn enough in such a short space of time, besides how to pass the test. And when it comes to driving a car, you want to learn more than just how to pass!

That's all the current test does - teach you how to pass the test. Nothing more in my opinion.

I learn better if I keep repeating something over and over. If I did a "traditional" course it would take years for anything to sink in.
When I do get around to doing it, I don't really expect to pass first time, its more a way of getting 45 hours of driving experience. I will then book extra lessons depending on how much work I still need to do. |

But then again, another instructor might have just been out to get you passed. Ahh so many pitfalls when it comes to this. There's probably no ideal way tbh, other than of course experience.

That's all the test has ever done, you pass the test and then learn to drive.

I am jealous of all you people who only need two lessons, I'll have fifty hours clocked before I even take my test!
I wish I had a car to practice in

I was lucky, I spent some time with my parents, but also spent 4/5 years driving in the fields in my grandmother's home in France (she has acres and acres of land) - so that helped, all I needed to learn how to do is to do it on the road without killing people.
