my desktops and themes are so standard - doesnt installing gui enhancers and so on slow down the machine?

Marginally, but not nitceably, but it also depends on the GUI enhancer, it only occasionally flicks up into the 1% CPU usage area, and takes <17Mb of RAM with this theme running, even with its small alpha blends.
