That does look good and I was considering getting a fire like that ... ish. Its given me a couple of ideas for mine, after I have gotten the sodding woodchip off the walls

The stuff for the patio wall arrived yesterday (well, the wall blocks, the mortar mix, the course sand and for bedding the patio, but no slabs yet unfortunately). The lorry managed to hoist it into the front garden from a narrow private drive next to us - though apparently there wasn't enough room to put out the stabilizers and at times the lorry was on two wheels when lifting over the blocks. Anyway - I digress.
We have decided to go for 6 inch blocks rather than a double skin of 4 inch to save time (but oddly, not money) Anyway - these blocks are medium to high density and pretty damn solid! I spent today dry building the corners to get it straight in my head how the wall will be put together. The foundations were poured weeks ago with my dad's help, and the two of use went mental with a lump and sledge hammer to make our own hardcore using the bricks from the original wall - I cant wait to finally be able to walk on flat ground again! We have decided to make wider steps that go around the corner as how we originally planned it was going to be a fiddle and a half to fit the blocks around 3 corners and actually made the garden look far too enclosed. |

Starting to take shape!
When the slabs finally arrive, just get them to tip them off the back of the lorry and you'll save yourself the job of smashing them up.

4 days of hard work and the wall is up, steps are built and 4 slabs have gone down (walls still need rendering, step risers need painting and I need to fill between the slabs on the steps - incidently, does anyone know how best to do this? use paving grout, or brush in some dry mix sand/cement?)
I have to say that I'm very tired, achy, but on the plus side - feeling pretty buff (though the right side of my back has grown muscle quicker than my left, so I'm all wonky!) First two images show the state of the patio the night before last, when the wall was finally completed and a step had been constructed These pictures show the garden as it is now... Four slabs down and general overview of the project The centerpiece steps, nice and open. View as you enter the area - second set of steps provide access to side lawn. Me and Clare are dead chuffed so far - particularly with the main steps! While I've been doing this (with my dad, then Clares), Clare has painted the hallway upstairs and downstairs and given almost every door in the house a new coat of glass... hard work in the pheckers place!
