Warrior King

Is to Tony Jaa what Rumble in the Bronx was to Jackie Chan - a great showcase for the stars supreme athleticism and martial prowess but otherwise a clumsy and poorly played story largely unsuitable for western audiences.
There's a cameo from Chan himself to keep an eye out for.

Watched this after hearing from numerous people how good it was.
Were we watching the same film?
Maybe that's a bit harsh. Essentially the film was enjoyable, and funny in places. Kari and I both were turning and looking at each other on regular occasions because it seemed we were missing at least half the humour. They were trying to make conversations like it was old friends reconnecting with years of history, and to an extent they succeeded, but because we hadn't been there 10 years ago+ it made it feel very awkward like we were always missing something subtle.

One last pondering.. does John get his sister every job? Seems like I keep coming across her in his films.

End of the first film the predator carried back on to the ship is impregnated. You see several clear pointers towards this back when he was inside the pyramid, and then at the end of the film.

They do get in a lot of films because they are well liked, though arguably she is better than he is. I personally thought GPB was exceptional.

I'd agree, prefer her to him generally, she generally does a better job.. except for Martian Child.

Quite a few people have said that this is how Bond & Bourne should have been done. They are wrong!

It's a fun action/thriller will some good action sequences but not much more. I knew it was only ~90 minutes going in so found the story setup too long and it didn't make me like any of the characters (important when you're supposed to be routing for them). The ending was the typical Hollywood "it's all over now so lets completely forget the horrific things that have been happening for the last few days" happy ending that I should have been expecting but was dissapointed to see.

If you can get past the weak story line (it tries to be an action thriller but fails at the thriller part) then it's an 8/10. If you want the thriller aspect then 6/10 so overall a pretty solid

Aha, in that case the follow-up would have really benefited from just showing 90 seconds of catch-up. Or maybe not. The rest of it was fairly contemptuous!

The Machinist 7/10

pretty deep stuff, physiological thriller i think, not realy my cup of tea but i love christian bale and he was awesome in this

and damn he lost some weight to do this film

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Overly long for what it is, which is the story of a young lad who idolises Jesse James and finds himself a part of his crew. Casey Affleck is superb in his role and makes it look like most of the other cast are just getting the job done. He's suitably on edge for the whole film and made me as the viewer feel uncomfortable in his presence, as he does to the other characters.

I found it hard to tell whether the narration was necessary. It kind of drops in and out and almost serves as a lazy way of explaining bits they've missed out - but then this is based on a book so maybe it was the only way to get all the info in. At least once or twice though it felt like they were explaining what the characters were thinking, when it felt quite obvious to me from the acting what was going on.

I'll just add that I thought the direction was amazing. Some brilliantly framed scenes and great use of awkward pauses and prolonged silences. Just a shame it made the film at least half an hour too long.
