Taken

Difficult one. Good acting with some utterly fantastic fight scenes. I feel i must focus on the fight scenes with this one because the thing is, i'm utterly fed up with this 'shakey cam' that so many action films have adopted recently. I'm not sure whether they were an excuse to allow for poor choreography or just an artistic decision but they are terrible, you can never see what's going on and it usually leaves me feeling a little ill. This film however did them perfectly, even while under the influence of a bottle of wine i knew exactly who was where and what they were doing and it was just utterly awesome for it. That said though, the story took the role of being shakey, the whole film seemed to scream 'send your young american daughter to europe and they will get kidnapped by greasy europeans!', it just didn't seem to make sense. When she was kidnapped and the dad asked the step-father 'have you got any enemies in europe?!' i thought, 'oh ok, it wasn't random, there was a premeditated motivation for her kidnap', nope, turns out it wasn't that, just greasy europeans.

Great ride, but left a hint of a sour taste in my mouth.

7/10

Day Watch has all the weaknesses you've identified in Night Watch but more so unfortunately. It feels more like a showcase for the directors bag of tricks than an adaptation of the greatly superior book.

Jumper

More like the feature length pilot episode of a TV series than a film - albeit with lots of effects shots. If that was the only problem it wouldn't be so bad but the plot is jumbled, the pacing is erratic and the acting is stilted. At least it's short.

I felt that way when watching it. It would have been a fantastic Television series, the characters and plot were set perfectly for such a thing.

It definitely had a "made for TV" feel about it.

I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in a cinema. I'd definitely have felt short changed.

Nor me, especially as IIRC the trailer made the movie look fantastic.

I was rather disappointed too. I enjoyed myself, but it wasn't all it was hyped up to be at all.
