In Bruges
Exactly my cup of tea. Would make a good stage play - a real tragi-comedy. All the actors play their parts spot on, and clearly Ralph Fiennes has been taking a few pointers from Ben Kingsley, or at least watching Sexy Beast a lot. Didn't know what was going to happen from one scene to the next and it was over before I knew it, in a good way. One line near the end absolutely slayed me. I won't spoil it, but will simply refer to it as Fiennes' 'canal line' so you can identify it. Brilliant. 9/10

Wanted
Starring
Typical action film, the kind you watch when you just want to know you'll enjoy the film at face value. I enjoyed - The plot twist, Angies arse and the guns GF enjoyed - Not sure which parts, but she liked it Overall 7/10. Typical action film but if that's what you're after it's a thoroughly enjoyable romp

It's what many Western fans call the best Western, never watched it as I only have the region one copy and my DVD player decided to pack in as I went to watch it. Everyone I know absolutely loves it though.

Death Race
Just rented this last night, action film with Jason Statham starring. Yup you guessed it cars, gun, explosions, his usual plot. I've not seen the original but quite fancy seeing it now for a comparison. I didn't realise Ian McShane was in it, haha, I couldn't get round him not being Lovejoy. Not bad action flick, keep you entertained for an evening. 6/10

Gone Baby Gone
Casey Affleck, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman Dir. Ben Affleck Tightly wound detective thriller about a little girl’s abduction from a poor area of Boston which wraps around a core of moral ambiguity which demands discussion after viewing. Ben Affleck does a superb job bringing the story to the screen and also draws fine performances from the cast. My only minor criticisms are that he fails to reign in Freeman’s stagey dramatics to match the naturalism of the remaining cast and effectively forces a judgement on the audience with a largely unnecessary coda. 8/10 Hellboy II : The Golden Army A glorious window into the fevered imagination of Guillermo Del Toro where fantastic creature design, make-up and effects and a focus on likeable characters almost disguise a formulaic and oddly uninspired story and typical setpiece-exposition-setpiece-exposition structure. Luke Goss (yeah him from Bros) is rather good as the elf prince with a grudge. 7/10

The Spirit.
Not having the graphic novel I had no idea what the film was going to be like, apart from being another Sin City/300 clone. I wasn't wrong, every trick Frank Miller learned making those movies has been used here, granted it's looks like it is supposed to be semi film noir(ish) but it doesn't seem the gel witht he script which plays out like an old Saturday afternoon matinee of cheesy jokes. Plus points (for the men) is that there is an abundance of hot females: Scarlett Johansson Eva Mendes Jamie King Sarah Paulson Stana Katic Still, they don't really help the film at all so I'll give it a very generous 7/10 |
