I notice none of the other retailers are even mentioning stock levels.
eBuyer are buying big quantities daily so I wouldn't expect them to not be able to meet demand

Is Windows 7 really that good that I should be concerned about pre-ordering it? What does it do over Vista and XP that makes it so essential?

I think the point of the pre-order is more about the price rather than anything else, Davey. Home Premium is going for about £50 on pre-order but the RRP is something like £150 or so.

Ah, I see. May pre-order a copy then and have a play with RC2 (I think I've got a copy of it somewhere) and then either cancel or keep it depending on how much I like it.

Professional basically adds these features:

Location-aware printing
Domain join
Encrypting file system
Advanced backup
Remote desktop host
XP compatibility mode (the virtual machine thingy)

In a change to the Vista HP/Business structure, W7 Pro is a genuine superset of HP and thus still includes all the "home" features like Media Center.

I've ordered a Pro for myself (and two HPs for other machines), partly because of the above features but also because I've had issues with certain bits of MS software not working on Vista HP and requiring Business or Ultimate. Examples are Virtual PC and the Hyper-V manager. Tools such as these may or may not work on W7 HP but I figured I'd just get Pro this time round to make sure. Vista Business wasn't an option as I need things like Media Center and Ultimate was too expensive.
