Pretty happy with the results from a 10meg NTL link.

A quick question for you web guru peeps

Been having slow surfing the past couple of days and really terrible pings whilst playing Guild Wars so thought I'd do a quick speed test.

Speedtest.net gave me a down speed of about 800kb/s not good for a 4mb line.

ADSLguide.org gave approx the same reading.

Upload speed is fine at 380kb/s.

I tested again this morning before work and got full speed, about 4000kb/s
Tested when I got in from work about 4.30 back down to 800kb/s and pings on GW are over 1000ms

Tested at the download bit that Robert posted earlier (http://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk) and get full speed of 480kb/s

Tried Garps speedtest that was linked earlier that gave me a bandwidth of 380kb/s

Does anyone have any ideas why all speed tests, surfing and gaming pings are so bad but I can download from some servers at full speed?

Hope all that make sense and thanks in advance for advise.

Oh and I have rebooted the modem and tried it straight to my PC without the router in the way

Bandwidth throttling by your ISP at peak times?

According to their site they only throttle if you've downloaded more than 750mb between 4pm and midnight and Ive made certain that I havent done that for ages.
Also I thought that would have throttled the download speed I get from servers as well as ping/surfing speeds?

I'll try the speedtests again just before and just after midnight.

If they go from slow to fast then I'll be on the phone to them when I get up tomorrow.

Simple answer is that NTL suck

More complicated answer is that anyone not on XL Broadband with Virgin on an NTL connection is suffering at the moment. The infrastructure has not been properly upgraded yet and so to ensure that all XL customers are receiving their upgraded speed everyone else is suffering. Telewest areas aren't too bad but are still getting drops.

The biggest problem is that even if you do ring up and complain then you'll not get anywhere due to some fantastic wording in the contract (which I'm yet to sign as I never received it) which states "speeds up to XXmb/s".

One day things will be better, I suspect we'll be too old to care by then though :/

*Thanks God for being on TW*

Seriously though - they are putting some serious effort into upgrading their infrastructure. They are doing some serious work in pompey - as the network was dodgey as they bought it from Eurobell in the 80s I think. They are currently making MAJOR changes to fix certain aspects of the network and to upgrade it to 20mb.

I haven't noticed any problems yet
I know I'm the boring one that rarely has any problems with NTL but so far I seem to be doing fine with my download speeds.
