Stan's tasty stew.
There's nothing better in winter than a nice hearty bowl of stew. Here's one I cobbled together using bits of recipes of the web, combined with a bit of inventiveness from me. Made this for the first time today and it tastes lovely. Usually when I mess around with recipes, I f*** it up but this time, I've got it right \o/
Ingredients: 1lb lean stewing steak 1 large onion 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves 1/2lb carrots 1/2lb tatties 1 can borlotti beans 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 pint beef stock 1 tablespoon black treacle 2 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon cumin 1 bay leaf Flour Salt and pepper to taste. Method: Fry onions, garlic and red pepper in a little oil until soft. Dust meat with flour and lightly fry to seal. Bung in all the rest of the ingredients, bring to the boil and then simmer gently for about an hour and a half. Serve with a big chunk of crusty bread. Simple but delicious. I got Three good sized portions out of it. I would think it would easily yield four decent sized portions.

I'm trying to lose weight or I would have had half of it
You could do dumplings with it - although, it does have a slight sweetness to it which may not suit dumplings

Have just put this on!
I chopped and changed with some of the ingredients but based it on this Ingredients: 1lb lean stewing steak 1 large onion (3 small onions) Mushrooms - loads of them - and just for my mushroom followers - I didn't wash em *scandal* 2 garlic cloves 1/2lb carrots 1/2lb tatties (roasted these) 1 can chopped tomatoes Teaspoon of tomato puree 1 pint beef stock 3 x bisto onion granules (to make it thicker) Splash Lee & Perrings Half a glass of red wine Flour Salt and pepper to taste. - Agreed! Even though I removed all the stuff you liked! Chopped toms nice touch. Tried to cook some dumplings, but think they were freezer burnt :/ next time will try the real ones! @ BB x Last edited by BBx; 09-01-2010 at 21:21. |

That's the joy of cooking, you can take a recipe and adapt it to suit your own taste. Can't believe you left out the borlotti beans though Although, at least you replaced them with mushrooms - and unwashed too Might try substituting the treacle with red wine next time, like wot you did, sounds like it could be good. Also, chopped tomatoes in stews and casseroles are ace
