Default Microsoft extend the E74 warranty to 3 years

Quote:
Microsoft’s confirmed it’s to extend 360 hardware warranties for those suffering the increasingly infamous E74 failure.
“While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays ‘E74′ on their screen,” the firm said in a statement.
“After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007.”
If your machine suffered from an E74 previously, and you had to pay for repairs, Microsoft will refund you in the coming 4-12 weeks.
If you get the E74 message it essentially means your machine’s cooked.

Good news for anyone who may get this problem in the future

So that's not the RRoD?
Is that the error I've had twice? 1 red quadrant?

Sounds to me like it's essentially a RROD except instead of an actual RROD it just says E74 on the display instead.

From my understanding E74 is the new RRoD. My console is back \o/

I can't remember I got an Exx error before mine went boobies up and I got my 3 red lights.

Rumour has it that the NXE changed the way in which the 360 reported a hardware failure, what would normally have been a RROD was sometimes reported as E74. Evidence to support this claim is thin on the ground, basically it's all unofficial surveys and word of mouth showing that since the introduction of the NXE the number of RRODs had decreased and the number of E74s had increased. This news does increase my belief that the rumour is true though.

Whether this was to try to reduce the number of units they'd have to repair under the 3yr warranty or just a bi-product of the update is anyones guess however. I know which the conspiracy lovers would prefer.

that's where it gets confusing for me, that quote exactly. If it's just RRoD, then nothing has changed, as it's always been 3 years. I was under the impression that E74 reported as 1 red quadrant and it's what I've had on my 2 other Xbox's.

s*** happens in the software world and those conspiracy lovers need to get over themselves, especially since there's no conspiracy now.

Doesn't seem confusing to me. Microsoft are saying that E74 ⇔ 3RRoD. Doesn't matter if E74 is accompanied by zero, one, two, three, or eleventy million flashing red lights, it's a 3RRoD and covered. Streeteh's post does raise a question about whether pre-NXE E74s exist and are covered, however.
