Gigapan
Last night I went to a local event called "Manoa Geeks" which is just a geek up, meet up, eat up and show thing. Covers pretty much anything, but those involved have to be locals or local companies.
Amongst them was biologist Richard Parmer, who happens to also take Gigapixel photographs for a hobby. He got to beta test some hardware called the Gigapan Epic a while back: http://www.gigapansystems.com/ Seems like a pretty good bargain. The gigapan photographs he's taken are just stunning.
