"Please be informed that we only support mod_rewrite for .htaccess"

Thats what my host has said to me, but i want to install drupal for my dissertation research and obviously my hosting company are trying to tell me they don't support the methods used in the drupal htaccess file.
Now I don't understand this stuff, but i was hoping someone might as the support team at streamline has lost all technical knowledge over recent years and i now think my tickets go to a team of monkeys :/

anyways, the .htaccess file;
Code:
#
# Apache/PHP/Drupal settings:
#

# Protect files and directories from prying eyes.
<FilesMatch "\.(engine|inc|info|install|module|profile|test|po|sh|.*sql|theme|tpl(\.php)?|xtmpl|svn-base)$|^(code-style\.pl|Entries.*|Repository|Root|Tag|Template|all-wcprops|entries|format)$">
  Order allow,deny
</FilesMatch>
