Default Goodbye high street.

I noticed some "Tesco Metro coming soon!" signs on the outside of one of the large shops that closed down some time back.

This basically means the end of the highstreet for many of the surviving shops. It's so depressing.

To my joy, southfields village has all the "town" shops you could want. A fantastic butcher, green grocer and fruit shop! I will be spending less time in Sainsburys and Waitrose! \o/

Small local shops > supermarkets!

I 100% agree with you both! Since I have discovered the green grocers and the butchers quality produce (I never noticed or cared when I was younger) I absolutely hate buying food from a supermarket, unless I can't get it from them. I always try and get the meat from the butchers if I get home in time before it closes.

Have you tried any of the Restaurants yet?

If they are still there, the Thai Girder is very nice.. also from Southfields tube go down Replingham road and turn right at the bottom.. there is a small take away called Tuk Tuk thai which is very nice for takeaway.

Sarkhel's for Indian food very good too! (bottom of replingham road)

and the Olive tree is fairly nice for Italian type food but not overly authentic.

will it though? I think that used to be the case. But if the street has a good reputation. then I think it will be fine.

it's like there is a big debate about a Tesco on Gloucester road in Bristol. It's not going to close the butchers, cheese shop, thai/vietnam/chienese outluts. These are good shops which are well respected and have a good customer base. People aren't going to give up these high quality products to shop at a tesco express..

Yup scoped out Tuk Tuk looks good - took a menu home.

Saw Sarkhel too - thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the other suggestions - the olive tree does look nice but as you say not overly authentic. However there are so many nice little shops and so on really lovely.

Definitely agree with this.

Wanstead High Street has both a Co-op (formerly Somerfield) and a Tesco express. Not to mention the massive Tesco in Leytonstone.

Despite this there's a butchers and a green grocers on Wanstead High Street which do remarkably good trade (for good reason) as well as quite a few delicatesans, and bakers (well, Greggs and Percy Ingle, but they're ok).

Tesco/supermarkets are good for bulk things (canned goods, cereals, drinks, home goods) but if you have access to higher quality produce from a decent specialist then it's something which will certainly be retained.

The butcher, fish shop and two bakeries went many years ago thanks to the Sainsburys. Doubt the specialist sausage shop will be affected but I can't see why anyone will be using the two convenience stores if there's a Tesco Metro undercutting them. I expect the offy will get hit as well.
