Default PC Performance Testing Software

Can somebody recommend something to run on a machine that, to me, seems to be way under-performing. It's only a 2GHz Celeron running XP that is used for IE and MS Word. It seems to me that something is up but I can't quite pinpoint it. Task Manager shows the the CPU levels are usually pretty damn low so I don't think it's that, but something is grinding the system down.

Well, the fact that it's a Celeron really doesn't help. Never used one that hasn't felt dire slow, but then, they are crippled CPU's.

There are a lot of general benchmarking tools out there, like PCMark (commonly used on the hardware review sites).

2GHz is the point at which Celerons are supposed to improve from dire to just suck.

Could be something simple like not enough RAM, or a badly fragmented hard disk, or something like that.

Depends on which architecture really. I imagine anything still on netburst will simply remain at dire.

If it was for an individual component I could suggest a number of things but as a general query on system speed PCmark as Daz suggests is probably about the best, as an outside shot you could try 3dmark2001 as that is more dependant on the overall system than the later versions.

Have you tried disabling unnecessary processes and trimming down what is in the system tray/startup? That can help a bit
